Our Leader Bart Worden

Bart Worden is the current Leader for the Ethical Culture Society of Westchester. As a college student, Bart aimed to pursue a religious vocation, but his journey to Ethical Culture Leadership took twenty four years. He obtained his bachelor's degree from Hope College in 1978 majoring in Philosophy of Religion. After graduating from college Bart worked in a music store and as a luthier's apprentice before finding his way into community mental health as a Therapy Aide in a state psychiatric hospital in New Jersey. In 1983, he obtained a masters degree in social work from N. Y. U. and then served as a social worker and psychotherapist for adults with psychiatric disabilities. For nine years he served as director of The Guidance Center's Rochelle House day treatment program. He continues to serve the Guidance Center as the agency's Associate Executive Director in charge of the agency's behavioral health and substance abuse services.

Bart's wife, Ruthanne introduced him to ECSW twenty-one years ago, and they and their two children have been active participants there. In 1995 Bart returned to his initial goal of becoming a professional clergyman and applied for Leadership Training with the American Ethical Union. As part of his training he attended the Humanist Institute in New York City, from which he graduated in 1997. During the last two years of his training he worked as a leader-intern at the New York Society for Ethical Culture in Manhattan.

Bart was called to Leadership by his home Ethical Society in July of 1999. In addition to his regular duties of giving inspirational addresses, developing programs for the Society, providing community outreach, officiating at ceremonies and offering pastoral counseling he has been active within the American Ethical Union, serving on the Religious Education Committee, the Growth and Development Committee and the AEU Planning Committee as a representative of the AEU National Leaders Council. Bart is the current President of the National Leaders' Council and a member of the AEU Board of Directors.
